what i did on friday evening?....violing away time

i had said in my previous post that i havent attended a carnatic concert.little did i realise that god's been browsing thru my posts.no other reason why i got to attend one last friday.it all began when my friend asked me whether i could accompany him for the concert that day.i wasnt too interested nor did i say a "no".i asked him who's playing this evening."ganesh kumaresh" he replied.i decided to begin my carnatic journey with such a beautiful concert.this excitement of attending a carnatic music concert took me into a new world mastered by imagination.as a result, not much of the stuffs that were taught in the later part of the day were absorbed by me.the concert was to begin at 6.00 pm.my coll leaves at 4.30.so i thought that i could refresh myself before the show.life's full of crests and troughs.i came home only to find the door locked.i called up dad who said that mom had gone to meet granny and it should take some time for her to return.shit!i had wasted a hell lot of petrol driving all the way from coll to home.neverthless,i was very much looking forward for the evening.by the time i was back at coll,it was arnd 5.30(the concert was to take place in my coll premises).these are some of the most dificult situations to be thrown into.when u r wid ur friends or family, time flies.but when u r alone and have nothing to do,its a killer.i somehow managed to spend time till 6.00.meanwhile my friend had also arrived.ah!i atleast have someone to talk to.we went inside the hall.the atmosphere looked great.the hall was almost packed.i managed to hunt down 2 seats right under the air condition.the concert started and was in full swing.as i didnt have a sound knowledge about carnatic music,i couldnt appreciate their technical brilliance.but their music surely did take me into a new world.i was truly mesmerized.several incidents that are perhaps worth posting are as follows:
1.one man going through the newspaper and simt. listening to the music.my eyes were quick enuf to peek......he was reading an article about the PM's leadership qualities.so its fair to say taht in both the cases you had men dancing to someone else's tunes.

2."mami" trying to explain a recipe to her daughter in law.

3.thatha going thru the menu list in front of the canteen......hungry man.....nothing wrong if he mistook the thukada to be broken pieces of pakoda.

thus i had a lovely experience.after the concert i went up stage and congartulated the violin duo for providing me a great experience.these are truly happy days going on for me.

and yes..........my hearty christmas wishes to all.

hugs

december-chennai's the place to be.

pick the odd one out:whats happening this december?
a)rolling stones concert,bangalore
b)the much awaited release of film"taare zamen par"
c)carnatic music festival,chennai
d)balaji getting his ipod nano.

well..........u've taken ur time.the obvious choice has got to be (c).
the music festival in chennai is an annual feature and is a treat for music lovers and also for men who would like to avoid getting back home early.chennai is home to almost all great musicians and also houses various sabhas, where these events take place.the tickets are sold like hot cakes.this festival goes on for a month with the concerts being held in the evenings.though i havent got the experience of attending a concert,i hope i cud break the jinx this season.but from what i ve heard, its a lovely experience and not attending one of them is perhaps the biggest mistake u cud make.this festival is part of our tradition which makes it even the more important to attend .moreover, ours is a family thats deeply rooted with culture.i shudnt been mistaken for a guy who takes false pride in his ancestry and past.i do beleive that a person who takes pride in his ancestry is like a potato plant ,the best part of which is underground.but lets not forget that the past plays an important role in determining the quality of the present and the prospects of the future.so taking pride in our culture and keeping in constant touch with our tradition isnt a mistake at all.so for all of those who have been in chennai and yet havent really got a taste of this festival.......please make it his time.december is always a fun month with festivals knocking the door one after the other.i have a great admiration for santa and thats perhaps why i like christmas.i m trying to get some decorations up for xmas.some say xmas is all about snow and wine."here in chennai, theres isnt anything as snow, and for wine...................well,you know....".my dad has also promised me an ipod nano which can be accepted as a gift for his birthday, xmas and new year.oh!i nearly forgot.......i thought of posting a greeting for my dad on 14th dec(thats the day)........but well....thanks to the guy who invented a thing called "belated birthday wishes".dad has turned **......lemme put it this way then......he has turned 30 .............with 19 years of experience.so happy birthday dad on behalf of me,luthi and amma.(dont think i have forgotten the long pending dinner party).so this month its ipod, dinner, music festival...........so truly a treat for all senses!!!!!

an emotional journey down the lane

its been just a couple of months that i ve begun my college life and some may feel its too early to start missing your school life.but i really miss them.the memories of my school days especially the last two years sprung up in my mind today morning when my college professor announced a special class tomorrow i.e sunday.i started to recollect the incidents that used to happen those days.you mite mistake me for a bad chap whose dreaming of things in the class instead of listening to the prof..............but no..what do you expect a student to do after he has worked under the sun for 5 hrs. that too cleaning the campus(wondering for the first time ............have we littered the campus so much??).we wernt really in a mood to attend the physics class.half of them gave up the battle and signed in to the wonderful world of dreams.v told the prof. that we wernt really in a situation to attend the class."my body spake ,not I".i told him that my soul was willing but my flesh was weak.he was kind enuf to understand.i was happy but was the happiness short lived.to be precise, till the moment when he announced that there wud be a special class tomorrow(sunday) to compensate today's loss.you wud expect us to sigh and shout and do all sorts of stuffs to persuade the prof to cancel the class.but that didnt happen.infact the class was silent.if u wanna know y,...........go up 6 lines.having made the announcement, the prof. asked us to have rest.suddenly several thoughts came in front of me which reminded of those beautiful days.....indeed beautiful they were.at school we worked 5 days a week.and when our maths sir asked us to come on a saturday,we used to make this hell sort of a noise that is far from any one's imagination.our effort proved succesful most of the times.the rest.........well you know the outcome.i also recollect those days when we used to have a holiday declared for even the slightest of rains and sometimes the met. dept too were helplful.i am also reminded of those "sports day" and "annual day" rehersel days.most of the times, the entire class wud give their names to some event or the other with the reason behind this being "not attending classes" and nothing else.i really had sum gr8 friends there.the memories of the time spent with them ,the pranks, the fun,and not to forget the academics are still fresh in my mind.i also think of the exams which we used to have and this i shud tell you were really exhaustive.the school trip to water parks, medical research centres were all packed with fun and facts.i remember the days when i used to ring up some weak student in my class to ask him whether the prof. has given him some idea of the expected question paper .........or some important questions etc....(no,i havent received any calls.)i also think about the practical hours which we had.they were real fun man.i have always loved practical classes than theory be it phy, chem or bio.the excitement which you get when you have correctly figured out the salt type in the given sample(sometimes you identify the anion correctly and you are too lazy to find the cation).physics practicals have been a bit not interesting(have avoided using the word "boring").i wasnt much interested in finding out the tension of a given string, using a screw gauge to find the diameter of a small wire etc.but there were some interesting times too.bio practicals were awesome buddy.they were like doughnuts to me.yummy!!!.b4 doing practicals,i was under the impression that bio practicals meant only dissection of some poor speechless animal.but now i know its a lot more different and interesting too.i m also reminded of those days when we used to have some celebration in our school and one of the reasons why we liked attending them was the "refreshments" factor.hot samosas(strictly one each),cool drinks and cakes.and we would always stand near some quite aged teacher with dietary restrictions who would be kind enuf to pass on his share to us.i also want to mention about the library.the library was well equipped with a huge collection of books, novels, comics, magazines etc.and when we knew that the library is getting air conditioned......we didnt mind reading the same page for 10 times.and if i dont mention about the post exam atmosphere,it would be sheer injustice.the last day of exam was always special.we used to have a big celebration that day.the good feeling of "all's over" and for some a bitter feeling of "much more to come" dominated our thoughts.and the last day of our 12th class was very very special.cant forget it at all.it was like.........we were all together till this moment.it was now time to seperate.i knew it wud be a very tuff moment but i only prayed that i cud bear it gracefully.when i become a great guy one day,i will surely look back and say atleast"thank you".bcoz i know that all these days were very special to me and the memories are my priced pocessions.i thank god,my parents and teachers and friend for giving me such a beautiful and cherishable school life."memories of those beautiful days, which i hope to carry along, memories of those days which made my life a beautiful song"."so enjoy every moment of ur school life thinking that such moments are very few............coz the lord makes sure that thers a time when u have to bid adieu".

diwali dhamaka

as i am sipping chai sitting in my verandah, trying to get a glimpse of the road,i see the skies being lit by a couple of crackers.has india won any cricket match?i am perhaps the most stupid(super talented universal person in demand as my bro calls it)person here.hey c'mon its diwali time.and lets not forget that diwali is associated with lights and crackers.for all those who are struggling to find the meaining of diwali, here is some help form my side.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali.i start thinking about the need of so many festivals(sshh........my bro shudnt hear this.hes loving this culture .......as long as the schools reamin closed!!!)but this is indeed a very serious thought.whether the story thats associated with all hindu festivals is is true or not,the festival time sees all realtives comin
together, making new friends, buying new dresses, trying to gulp up as many sweets as possible.......etc.i feel that the basic purpose of having these festivals mite be this.especially in this modern era where the word "joint family"(if u havent heard of this term b4,u arent to b blamed)has not found a place in the dictionary, these festivals see the realtives comin together, the ladies busy with the preparation of bakshanams(=sweets),the male members trying to extend their 1 day leave to 2,children running about in the houses and pestering the elders for buying crackers(but in the end, they get afraid and its dad who needs to burst them all...........not that he likes it but the fact that the bought them all by his hard earned money!!!!)meanwhile the folks who are in their 2nd childhood stage are happy that they are getting new clothes to wear, telling about their school days to someone(the poor children are always the victim and this is a very tuff punishment, dude!!!!)etc.
the night b4 diwali,we all decide to wake up by 4.00 and we are succesful(actually.......it's arnd 5.30 when we wake up but......i ll prove you that we wake up by 4.00).here goes my proof.....let t1=240 mins(4 hrs) and t2=90 mins(1.5 hrs).since t1>>>t2,t2 can be neglected.thus we woke up at time T=t1=4.oo!!!!this is what physics is all about man.that morning we have a bath in hot water and this is given a special name-"ganga bath".we put on our new clothes and when there are a couple of more cousins with me,my eyes remain glued to their shirts judging as to which one looks better.the children want to go down and burst the crackers, they cant be sent alone.so someone should be sent with them for protection.and normally this beautiful job is taken by(more precisely enforced upon)the elder cousin who must be in his teens.and i think this yr ,i m the one.(wish me luck)after bursting crackers till some time,we go up and have our breakfast.we watch t.v and normally all our houses have only 1 t.v set.so the ratio of t.v:no. of people who want to watch the programmes of their own taste becomes 1:15 .so watching tv doesnt seem to be great option either.so we decide to go down again and continue to burst the crackers.we ignite the "2 shot"sky bomb.............this one goes up and burts twice.it looks good and its quite expensive too.it costs about rs.200.when the bomb goes up in the sky,u can see the children clapping and dancing but i realise how dad mus be feeling................rs 200 gone in 2 sec........poor guy.(no worries dad,i ll repay you........if u r patient enuf to wait for sum yrs)thus like the frog in the poem"frog and the nightingale
" by vikram seth,he is filled with joy both sweet and bitter.(this poetic device is called an oxymoron).thus this festival is all about having fun.and the best part of this festval is that we can gobble up pieces of the sweets as they are being made in the kitchen unlike some festvials like jannmashtami where we gotta wait till god has a go at all these goodies!!!!!!!(my mom makes some great sweets...........yes,u r invited)i only hope that this tradition will continue be alive in the minds and hearts if the billion.but when an indian goes to google search/wikipedia for finding out the meaning of the term diwali,i know its time.but i only hope that such a thing never happens.all librans are known to be optimistic and i m no exception.so ne1 ready with the crackers......then i'm game

You question Ram(-se-)too?

Let us get into a little bit of history and find out what the said structure means factually.

This structure of close to 48 kilometers which is 3 to 30 feet deep through its course and was well above the sea level till the 15th century. The oldest recorded map that mentions of Rama’s Bridge is the Malabar Bowen Map of Netherlands which is supposed to have been made in 1747, where the map mentions no name to the bridge but has mention about a place Ramencoil. Further, the same place is mentioned again in a 1788 Map of Hindoostan available in the Sarasvathi Mahal Library, Thanjavur.

This bridge has also been mentioned by James Rennel in his earliest maps of India 1788 as Rama’s Bridge. However, Rennel carefully and tactfully renamed the bridge as Adam’s Bridge in his 1804 version of the map.

Lying dormant under the waters, the bridge again came into light after the NASA’s satellite pictures released in the early 1990s created curiosity among historians and excitement among Dharmics. Tales started going around on the date of Rama’s Bridge starting from 1.75 million years to 3500 years. NASA though accepted the authenticity of the pictures, however refused to comment on the dating.

Few dating attempts have been made after that. While the Sri Lankan Archeological Department dates the bridge to close to 2 million years old, Centre For Remote Sensing, Bharathidasan University dated it close to 3500 years old.

While existence of this geographical phenomenon is not disputed, no research has been done to find out neither the man-made nature of the bridge nor the religious connection.

Religious Questions

For devout Dharmics who assume and believe the said structure or the geographical formation is a bridge built by Shri Rama, there are certainly a couple of religious questions that arise often. I have attempted to answer them supported by Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Why did Rama build a bridge instead of crossing over in a ship?

The number of soldeirs in Rama's army was huge. You might have to build too many
ships to cross over. Ramayana says "thousand crore monkeys crossed over". We can
take this number to be a poetic exaggeration, but the fact remains that the
number was on a higher side. Moreover, the sea god himself says that the waters
are rough and he will not be able to go against nature (even if god wishes, he
shall not breach the law of nature, is the beauty of Sanatana Dharma).

In slokas 2-22-25 to 2-22-28, the King of Ocean says, “O, beloved
Rama! Earth, wind ether, water and light remain fixed in their own nature,
resorting to their eternal path. Therefore, I am fathomless and my nature is
that it is impossible of being swum across. It becomes unnatural if I am
shallow. I am telling you the following device to cross me. O, prince! Neither
from desire nor ambition nor fear nor from affection, I am able to solidify my
waters inhabited by alligators. O, Rama! I shall make it possible to see that
you are able to cross over. I will arrange a place for the monkeys to cross me
and bear with it. As far as the army crosses me, the crocodiles will not be
aggressive to them.”

How was it possible to build such a bridge across the Ocean?

It was a planned effort and did not happen easily. Nala, the son of Viswakarma, the
celestial architect was a good architect as his father. I am giving below the
slokas and their translations on the building of the bridge. The posting of
slokas are too long, but then just read them, they are wonderful and worthwhile.
Valmiki describes construction of this bridge between Slokas 2-22-50 and 2-22-72

“I am a son born of Visvakarma’s own loins. I am equal to Viswakarma.
This god of Ocean has reminded me. The great ocean spoke the truth. Being
unasked, I have not told you my details earlier. I am capable of constructing a
bridge across the ocean. Hence, let the foremost of monkeys build the bridge now
itself. Then, being sent by Rama, hundreds and thousands of monkey heroes jumped
in joy on all sides towards the great forest. Those army-chiefs of monkeys, who
resembled mountains, broke the rocks and trees there and dragged them away
towards the sea. Those monkeys filled the ocean with all types of trees like
Sala and Asvakarna, Dhava and bamboo, Kutaja, Arjuna, palmyra,Tilaka, Tinisa,
Bilva, Saptaparna, Karnika, in blossom as also mango and Asoka. The excellent
monkeys, the forest animals lifted and brought, like Indra’s flag posts, some
trees with roots intact and some others without roots. From here and there the
monkeys brought Palmyra trees, pomegranate shrubs, coconut and Vibhitaka,
Karira, Bakula and neem trees. The huge bodied monkeys with mighty strength
uprooted elephant-sized rocks and mountains and transported them by mechanical
contrivances. The water, raised up due to sudden throwing of mountains in the
sea, soured upward towards the sky and from there again, gushed back. The rocks
befalling on all sides perturbed the ocean. Some others drew up strings a
hundred Yojanas long (in order to keep the rocks in a straight line.) Nala on
his part initiated a monumental bridge in the middle of the ocean. The bridge
was built at that time with the cooperation of other monkeys, of terrible
doings. Some monkeys were holding poles for measuring the bridge and some others
collected the material. Reeds and logs resembling clouds and mountains, brought
by hundreds of monkeys, lead by the command of Rama, fastened some parts of the
bridge. Monkeys constructed the bridge with trees having blossom at the end of
their boughs. Some monkeys looking like demons seized rocks resembling mountains
and peaks of mountains and appeared running hither and thither. Then, a
tumultuous sound occurred when the rocks were thrown into the sea and when
mountains were caused to fall there. On the first day, fourteen Yojanas of
bridge were constructed by the monkeys speedily, thrilled with delight as they
were, resembling elephants. In the same manner, on the second day twenty Yojanas
of bridge were constructed speedily by the monkeys of terrific bodies and of
mighty strength. Thus, on the third day twenty-one Yojanas of the bridge were
constructed in the ocean speedily by the monkeys with their colossal bodies. On
the forth day, a further of twenty-two Yojanas were constructed by the dashing
monkeys with a great speed. In that manner, on the fifth day, the monkeys
working quickly constructed twenty-three yojanas of the bridge up to the other
seashore. That Nala, the strong and illustrious son of Visvakarma and an
excellent monkey built the bridge across the sea as truly as his father would
have built it. That beautiful and lovely bridge constructed by Nala across the
ocean the abode of alligators, shone brightly like a milky way of stars in the
sky.”

Relevant to this case, there are a few questions that are still unaddressed, say,

1) First and foremost question is that whether the said bridge is man-made or a geological phenomenon.

2) If it were a geological phenomenon it would assume a great importance for geologists and scientists, making it very important for us to preserve it. It would probably become the oldest natural rock formation in India and the biggest and oldest natural rock formation of the world and the only one under the sea.

3) If it were man-made but not built by Rama, still it is of extreme importance as an archeological site. Probably it would classify as one of the man-made wonders of the world and the oldest ever man-made bridge to exist.

4) If archeologists and theologists can prove it to be anywhere closer related to Shri Rama, the importance would be the greatest, since it has a religious connotation and probably the biggest find relating the religion (especially Dharmic) and also of archeological importance attached with religion.

Among all this tensions, one thing surely brought all the Indians together….yes it’s cricket. India’s win at the T20 world cup won the hearts of the billion.if thers anything that can solve issues, its either cricket or mcdonalds!!!!!

I end this post with my sincere prayers”into the heaven of faith, dear almighty, let my country awake”

a tribute to the "city of all"

The city of mumbai whose lifelines are trains,
was washed away by violent rains.

Mumbai is truly incredible,
but the rains were very terrible.

The death tolls rising day by day,
send some rains here is what we chennaites pray!!!!!!

The water level was upto the head,
the phone connections were also dead

It was a very terrible day,
the slums were totally washed away.

The situation literally forced,
to keep the schools and colleges closed

The Arabian sea was with high tides,
Andheri was affected by landslides.

Many vehicles were totally drowned
and hundreds of dead bodies were then found

There was no transportation,
this was a very painful situation

The airport authorities were alerted
as a result many flights were diverted

The city observed heavy traffic jam
but the people provided as much help as they can

water water everywhere, all the vehicles did sink,
water water everywhere, not a drop to drink.

the city heard many cries
but the "spirit of mumbai"never dies

wada-pav stalls back on road,
passengers are back on board.

but mumbaikars are workaholic
mumbai is back with fun and frolic

trains are now back on track
courage is not what mumbaikars lack.

oh my dear mother nature,is this your play?
to keep people sometimes sad or else gay?

wounds of the blasts or struggle with the floods ,we forget lest,
a city where service to the people has become a jest.

but floodshed or bloodshed
mumbai remains the best

coz' for me and most of u'll it is alwayz"AAMCHI MUMBAI"
